Unitarian Minister. Horatio was born in South Bridgewater, Massachusetts, the son of James and Hannah (Bassett) Alger. He graduated from Harvard 1825 and from the Divinity School in 1828. He was ordained at the Chelsea Unitarian Church in 1829. He married Olive Augusta Fenno in March 1831 and they had five children - Horatio Jr, Olive Augusta, Ann, James and Francis. After financial difficulties, he moved to the West Church in Marlborough, Massachusetts (1845-1859), where he preached, was a member of the school committee, helped to organize the town's lyceum and represented the community in the state legislature. The family moved to South Natick, Massachusetts, where he was the minister of South Natick Parish (now the Eliot Church) from 1860-1874. He died at the family home in Natick.

Horatio is remembered on a monument in the Glenwood Cemetery.
