Howard M. Gamble died peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 22, surrounded by his family. A member of the family recently shared, "Howard was the greatest man I ever knew." It was agreed that this was the general consensus of the family, and indeed by most who knew him.
Howard was born May 18, 1927 in Brewster, Wash., to Joseph and Myrtle Gamble. He attended Brewster schools and graduated in 1945. The night of his graduation he left on a bus to San Diego for basic training in the U.S. Navy. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he enrolled at Eastern Washington College in Cheney. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1951.
On Jan. 31, 1949, he married Dorthy Dezellem in Pateros, Wash. Howard and Dorthy made their first and only home in Brewster, where he completed his student teaching, then taught sixth grade and coached high school baseball until 1952. He became the administrator of the Brewster Hospital on June 1, 1952 until his retirement in 2000. Howard received numerous commendations for his commitment to rural hospital districts during his administrative career, including the Joe Hopkins Memorial Award in 1987, an award he was most honored to receive. In addition, he served on the State Rural Hospital Board.
Howard was committed to serving his community and determined to make Brewster a good, safe place to live. He was a member of the Brewster City Council from 1955-1963 and elected as mayor from 1963-1981. He also functioned as Chamber of Commerce president, was a member of the Brewster School Board and a HOSTS volunteer at Brewster Elementary. In 2000, he and wife Dorthy received the Brewster Citizens of the Year award.
Athletics was a favorite pastime of Howard, and he was an enthusiastic Brewster Bears fan. He attended as many home and away events as possible. He served as an Okanogan County Official for more than 40 years and coached his son and grandsons in Little League baseball and AAU basketball.
Howard started the "97 In & Out Drive-In" with Rod Webster in 1956 and sold it in the late 1960s. He also managed his mother's pear orchard and owned an apple orchard for a number of years. Howard was a member of the Community Log Church and was baptized by Rev. Ray Glessner in 1963.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother, Robert Gamble, sister Morrell Hull and three infant sons.
Memorial service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Barnes Chapel in Brewster, Wash. Graveside service will be following the service at the Brewster Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Barnes Chapel.
