Raymond Ackerman was born on May 1, 1938 to Christian and Magdalena (Oberlander) Ackerman in Herreid, SD. When Ray was 5 years old, his family moved to Aberdeen, SD. He grew up and attended school in Aberdeen. After receiving his education Ray joined the United States Air Force. He served most of his four years in California though he was stationed in Guam for a short time.

Ray married Judy Sexton on June 28, 1963 in Aberdeen, SD. He was working for the Aberdeen School system at the time. Ray spent most of his time with the school system at Simmons Jr. High. In 1974, Ray began work for the General Service Administration. He then went to work for the city of Aberdeen at the airport in 1984 and was there until his retirement in 2003.

Ray had a servant's heart and was always willing to lend a hand to those in need. Taking time to fellowship with others was important to Ray and his time with Judy and friends drinking coffee at Ken's was a special time for them.
