Robert Allen Schaffer, a lifelong resident of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, passed away suddenly at the age of 63 at Middlesex Memorial Hospital, Middletown, Connecticut. He was the son of the late Monroe Allen Schaffer and Freida Zeh Schaffer; he was predeceased by a brother, Monroe Raymond Schaffer of Old Saybrook and an infant daughter, Cindy Lee Schaffer. Bob was a 1959 graduate of Old Saybrook High School; he was employed for 45 years at Monsanto Corp., now Silgan Plastics Corp., Deep River, Connecticut. He was looking forward to retiring in February and spending some time traveling. He enjoyed gardening and working outdoors, including splitting firewood for his woodstove. An innate love of fixing and building grew into a hobby refurbishing antique engines and tractors, and it was common to see him at shows as he was proud of his engine and tractor collection. He enjoyed photography and music, especially country western, and music sung by his daughter, Kristen.

He is survived by four daughters, Dawn E. Schaffer of Meriden, Lisa P. Gibson of East Haddam, Kristen L. Schaffer of Moodus, and Rebecca A. Schaffer of Old Saybrook. He leaves four grandchildren, an ex-wife, Sharon L. Schaffer of Moodus; a son-in-law, John J. Gibson of East Haddam, a sister-in-law, Mustuko "Peggy" Schaffer; a nephew, Raymond Schaffer both of Old Saybrook; and special friend, Dorothy "Dottie" Bowen of Westbrook, CT.
