Joe Winfield Castleman, Sr. passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, in Boerne, Texas, at the age of 99 years. Joe was the son of Earl Baker Castleman and Hattie Beatrice Covington. He was preceded in death by the love of his life of 68 years, his wife, Anne McNiel Castleman, a son, Joe Winfield Castleman, Jr., by brothers Jim, John, Charlie and Barnie, by sisters, Lillian Broom Little, Muriel Johnson, Tommie Birdie Strange and Ruth Ressel.

Joe is survived by his devoted family that loved him very much, daughters, Princess Cook, LaDawn Shryer and her husband G.P., and Tami Terry and her husband Joe, and by grandchildren, Joseph Castleman, III and his wife, Deborah Castleman, Hunter McGinty, Colt Crouch, Travis Terry and Maverick Terry, a great-grandson, Joseph Winfield Castleman, IV, as well as numerous beloved relatives.

Joe was born on April 21, 1912, in Boyd, Wise County, Texas. He and his brother Jim, known as the "Castleman Brothers," spent their early years as professional singers and musicians, broadcasting live on KTSA, KONO, KMAC and WOAI in San Antonio under various sponsors. In 1929, under the sponsorship of Mobil Oil Company, they made a movie called "The Heart of the Hills," as well as another film in Kerrville. They also played live music at the Texas Theater and dancehalls. Joe and Jim joined the "Bird Brand Cowboys Band" from 1934 through 1936, and under the sponsorship of Bird Brand Shortening Company, toured Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Kansas broadcasting on all N.B.C. stations nationwide. In 1939, Joe left the music business and began his life-long career in the ministry. Much of his ministry was spent traveling and evangelizing throughout Texas, the United States, and Israel. As a Church of Christ pastor for many years in San Antonio, his wife and he ran a mission, feeding homeless and needy people in downtown San Antonio. If anyone was ever in need, Joe was always ready to lend a helping hand. He was a dedicated man of God until the day he died, and all those who knew and loved him will dearly miss him, but are happy that he's now in his true home in Heaven.
