Please Note: A change has taken place with this memorial. For several years, this Joseph Akin Jr was thought to be the son of my Joseph Akin Sr b.1740 in Henrico Co., VA, however, new research & documents has revealed that it is not the case. He is still, however, related to the same Akin Family of Henrico, VA.

So, now I will present who he & his family really were:

Also please note, this family is not related in any way, to my knowledge, to James Akin b.1755 in Green Co., KY who married Mary Murphy. I do not believe the two Akin Family's are related. This can be determined, however, if you have access to an Akin male in your family and would like to compare Y-DNA Tests or perform one to make the determination. - Please Contact Me.

Joseph Akin Jr was the 1st born son of 2 sons & 1st born child of 3 born to Joseph Akin Sr b.1720 in Henrico Co., VA & d.Apr 1808 in Granville Co., NC -and to- Mary Eastland b.19 Mar 1739 in Virginia & d.Aug 1830 in Greensburgh, Green, KY and who were married 11 Oct 1774 in Mecklenburg Co., VA.

Joseph Akin b.1779 was married twice in his life. 1st to Martha Eastland and 2nd to Susannah Rice.

1st Marriage:

Joseph Akin Jr., before arriving in Green Co., KY between 1801 & 1810, was married on 21 Feb 1801 in Mercer Co., KY to Martha Eastland b.23 Feb 1784 in Virginia & d.16 Feb 1814 in Greensburg, Green, KY.

The surety of 50 pounds on the Marriage Bond of Joseph Akin Jr was shared by Martin Kelly, who married Joseph Akin Jr's sister, Elizabeth Akin, in Granville, NC in December of the same year. Elizabeth is also buried here.

Most, if not all, of Joseph & Martha's children are buried in the Akins Cemetery. I do not know what the cause of such early deaths were. However, I am saddened that it appears most of this Akin family might have ended here.

Their children were:

1. John H. Akin b.abt 1804 in possibly in Mercer Co., KY or Greensburg, Green Co., KY & d.11 Jan 1817 in Greensburg, Green, KY.

2. Mary E. or B. Akin b.17 Apr 1807 in Greensburg, Green, Ky & d.19 Oct 1838 in Greensburg, Green, KY
Married: Unknown Abbot (researching)

3. Julia A. Akin b.7 Mar 1808 in Kentucky & d.9 Oct 1865 in Louisville Ward 4, Jefferson, Kentucky, USA.

Note: Julia had a son Joseph b.abt 1830, who she gave her maiden name to, however I believe it is possible that the father was William Porter, buried in this cemetery. In 1860, she is living with the Porter Family in Louisville, KY.

4. Caroline E. Akin b.abt 1809 & d. Unknown.

5. Joseph Akin, MD b.5 Aug 1810 in Greensburg, Green, KY & d.7 Aug 1860 in Green Co., Ky.
Married Frances (Unknown) b.abt 1824 in Kentucky.

6. Thomas E. Akin b.21 Feb 1813 in Greensburg, Green, Ky & d.Apr 1836 in Greensburg, Green, KY.

2nd Marriage:

Joseph remarried to Susannah Rice abt 1820-1821. Susannah was b.abt 9 May 1783 & d.28 Jul 1829. The daughter of David Rice & Mary Blair.

Joseph & Susannah's children were:

1. John Akin b.abt 1821 in Greensburg, Green, KY & d.unknown at this time.

2. Samuel David Akin b.7 Jul 1822 in Greensburg, Green, Ky & d.28 Apr 1880 in Graham, Young, TX
Married: Mary Elizabeth Kincheloe on 11 Jun 1851 in Hardinsburg, Breckinridge, KY
