Father, Joseph Pickering traveled from England to the United States with his wife Jane Ann Brown 1856-1885. She died shortly after Nellie and a twin sibling were born. The James Head family took baby Nellie and raised her. Another family took the twin, a boy, but he did not live long and no one remembers what family that was.

In February 1888 he married Alice Jane Gibson .
1900 Census they are in Saline County Nebraska as George & Alice, with Ruth, Lena, Ebby, Jessie, Agnes.

The couple had one daughter, Eliza Ann Severns born in 1904.
Nellie died of Ovarian Cancer in 1933.
