Following unsuccessful attempts to shoot her husband to death at eight o'clock yesterday morning Mrs. W.H. Hollis, 54, locked herself in her home located six miles east of Monette in Craighead County near the Missouri line and drank two glassses of carbolic acid ending her own life.

A physician was summoned and said death was due to drinking acid and no inquest was necessary.

Two shots from a single barrell, twelve-guage shotgun were fired at her husband. One was fired while he was sitting in a chair in the house and the other after he ran into the yard.

Members of the family say that she had an incurable disease. Theory is advanced for the act is she knew she could not get well and decided to end the lives of both her husband and herself.

The tragedy occurred at their two-room house. According to reports, Mr. Hollis was sitting in the front room of the house near the front door reading a paper. Mrs. Hollis came into the room and he inquired when breakfast would be ready. The woman then went back into the kitchen and returned a few minutes later.

Not paying any particular attention Mr. Hollis stated he noticed his wife went to a trunk and took something out which is now thought to have been shotgun shells.

She then returned to the room and as she came through the door connecting the rooms Mr. Hollis looked up as the woman opened fire with the gun. Shot from the gun passed through his coat barely missing him and powder burning his left eye.

Mr. Hollis ran from the house into the yard with a second shot being fired by his wife. He went to a neighbor's house to secure help and while gone his wife locked herself in the house and drank the poison estimated at four ounces.

Before the door could be forced open she had lapsed into unconscienousness. Death occurred without her making a statement.

Members of the family report that Saturday she purchased the shotgun shells and poison. And prior to the purchasing of the shells she inquired fully as to how to operate the gun and the size of the shells it used.

Surviving are five children, two boys and three girls none of whom live at home.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 this afternoon from the family residence and burial was in Cochran Cemetery.
