The son of John and Elizabeth Sarah Cottrell Snead. He and Louisa William George were married in Goochland on 2 December 1860. On 11 December 1864 Alonzo enlisted with Company E of the Fifteenth Regiment of Virginia Infantry at Richmond. He was paroled at Appomattox on 9 April 1865, when the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered. From 1900 to 1905 he was Sunday School Superintendent at Deep Run Baptist Church in Henrico. Berea Baptist Church, where he and his family are buried, was started in the home of his parents, Twin Hill.
