Son of Joseph and Sarah Henley Bowles. He served in Company C of the 15th Virginia Infantry - CSA. His occupation was as a farmer. He enlisted at Grove Wharf on July 18th, 1861 and was promoted to corporal on May 16th, 1864. He was paroled at Appomattox on April 9th, 1865. His pension was dated April 24th, 1916 at age 76. He married (1) Ella R Leake 1867 and (2) Mary Otilia "Tilly" Waldrop 1870.
