Russell D. Brooks Sr., 87, Snyder Township, Tyrone, formerly of Duncansville, died Friday at the home of his daughter, Darlene.

He was born in Bellwood, son of the late George A. and Eva N. (Shawley) Brooks. He married Jean Eleanor Wilt on July 18, 1947, in Juniata, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 16, 2006.

Surviving are six sons: Russell Jr. of Petersburg, Andrew of Hollidaysburg, Allen of Huntingdon, Dallace of Columbia, Tenn., Kevin of Huntingdon and Raymond of Williamsburg; four daughters: Virginia Smith and Barbara Kurtz, both of Altoona, Darlene Brooks of Tyrone and Lisa Williams of Altoona; 25 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Brenda Sherry Brooks.

Russell was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific on the USS Langley (CVL-27). He was employed as a contractor and operated his own farm. He was an avid hunter, Pittsburgh Pirates baseball fan and Pittsburgh Steelers and Penn State football fan.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, and noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, Pastor Tim Guyer officiating. Interment will be at Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood, with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society
