He was born in Deerhurst, Gloucestershire, England to Elizabeth Ma, and Samuel Roberts. He emigrated to the United States as a young man, settling down in Illinois. He enlisted in the Union Army on September 2, 1862 and was mustered into his company on September 3, 1862 at Dixon, Illinois. He fought in the following battles; Perryville (October 8, 1862), Stone's River (December 30 - 31, 1862 & January 1 - 3, 1863), Middle Tennessee or Tullahoma Campaign (June 24 - July 7, 1863), Chattanooga – Ringgold Campaign (November 23 - 27, 1863), Dalton (February 22 - 27, 1864),Rocky Faced Ridge (May 8 - 11, 1864), Resaca (May 14 - 15, 1864),Adairsville (May 17, 1864), Pumpkin Vine Creek, Dallas, New Hope Church & Allatoona Hills (May 25 - June 5, 1864), Pine Hill (June 11 - 14,1864), Kennesaw (June 27, 1864), Peach Tree Creek (July 19 - 20, 1864), Siege of Atlanta (July 22 - August 25, 1864), Jonesboro (August 31 -September 1, 1864), Operations against CSA General's John B. Hood &Nathaniel B. Forest in North Georgia & North Alabama (September 29 -November 3, 1864), Nashville Campaign (November 24 - 27, 1864), Spring Hill (November 29, 1864), Franklin (November 30, 1864), Nashville(December 15 - 16, 1864) & Bull's Gap & Operations in East Tennessee March 15 - April 22, 1865). The following year, 1866, he crossed the plains to California, settling in Colusa, working on Adelbert E. Potter's Ranch in Cooper's Extension. He never married and passed away at the age of 67 years and is buried in the Colusa Community Cemetery.
