He enlisted in the Union Army on September 2, 1862 and was mustered into his company on September 3, 1862 at Dixon, Illinois. He fought in the following battles; Perryville (October 8, 1862), Stone's River (December 30 - 31, 1862 & January 1 - 3, 1863), Middle Tennessee or Tullahoma Campaign (June 24 - July 7, 1863), Chattanooga – Ringgold Campaign (November 23 - 27, 1863), Dalton (February 22 - 27, 1864),Rocky Faced Ridge (May 8 - 11, 1864), Resaca (May 14 - 15, 1864),Adairsville (May 17, 1864), Pumpkin Vine Creek, Dallas, New Hope Church & Allatoona Hills (May 25 - June 5, 1864), Pine Hill (June 11 - 14,1864), Kennesaw (June 27, 1864), Peach Tree Creek (July 19 - 20, 1864), Siege of Atlanta (July 22 - August 25, 1864), Jonesboro (August 31 -September 1, 1864), Operations against CSA General's John B. Hood &Nathaniel B.
