Gladys Irene (Bender) Harms, 89, Overland Park, Kan., passed away September 21, 2012. She was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Ellsworth, Kan., to Adolph and Emma (Shanelec) Bender. Gladys joined the U.S. Navy and served in WWII. An Overland Park resident since 1974, she worked for AT&T as an executive secretary until her retirement in 1995. She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Overland Park and part of the U.S. Navy Waves, Unit 9. Gladys is preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Mildred Grubb, and brothers, Harold and Gordon Bender, and granddaughter, Madison Toft. She is survived by son, Jeffrey W. Harms and wife Catherine and his children Benjamin, Elizabeth and Joseph Harms; daughter, Julia K. Toft and her children Ashley and Jordan Toft; and brother, Kenneth Bender. Visitation will be 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, with interment at Ellsworth Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, in c/o the funeral home, PO Box 45, Ellsworth, KS 67439.
