Edwin Buckle was born on March 25, 1917, in Prosper, Oregon, to Thomas Charles Buckle and Molly Leona Jones. At the age of twelve, he moved with his family to the Umpqua Valley near Roseburg, Oregon, where he attended the Close Valley grade school. Edwin graduated from Sutherlin High School where he excelled in baseball. In 1939 he moved to Moscow, Idaho, where he learned the auto body and fender trade. It was in Moscow where he met and married Gladys Iverna Ransom. When the Second World War broke out, he worked as a welder and ship fitter at the ship yards in Vancouver, Washington. In February 1943, he joined the Navy Sea-bees as a ship fitter first class. After boot camp, he was sent to the South and Asiatic Pacific for the liberation of the Philippines. He later received the Victory Medal for his service. He was also pleased to serve as a volunteer chaplain. Interestingly, his father Thomas Charles Buckle, had fought in three campaigns in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War.

Ed came home to Roseburg, Oregon, in 1946 and returned to the auto body and fender trade. In 1951 Ed moved with his wife Gladys to Paso Robles, California, where he established his own business: Buckle's Body Works. He ran this business until he retired; after which he moved to Winston, Oregon. In 1989, his wife Gladys died,. In 1990, Edwin married Marjorie Joanne Stiltner. They lived in Winston for several years, and in 1997 moved to Broadview Assisted Living in Glendale, California. There he took the position of maintenance man until he was 86. His wife Joanne passed away in 2004.
