William H. Downing enlisted with the 49th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment in 1862. He was captured by Confederate forces in the fall of 1863, but escaped and returned to his regiment in January of 1864. He was killed in action during the battle of Spottsylvania Court House. A brother, Joseph B. Downing, and a cousin, Benjamin H. Downing, also members of his regiment, were both wounded at that battle but survived the war.
William was the son of Thomas Downing and Mary Lightfoot Downing. Letters that he wrote during the war survive and are in the archives of the Uwchlan Township, Pennsylvania, Historical Society.
