NICHOLS, WILLIAM ROBERT *ROBERT*--William Robert Nichols was born to Edgar W. Nichols and Lillie M. Goodsell Nichols on May 13, 1906, on the family farm south of Fairmont. He was the oldest of eight children, two of whom died in infancy.
He was married to Maxine Hutchens of Geneva on March 17, 1938, and to them one child, Marilyn, was born.
Robert passed away at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva on Thursday, September 27, 1990, at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 14 days.
He attended country school at District 18 ad graduated from the Fairmont Public High School in 1923.
At the time of his graduation he had to forgo an awarded scholarship, as he was needed on the family farm.
He continued to live and work on the farm until 1935, when he went to work for his father on various road construction projects.
After the death of his father in 1936, Robert and brothers, Howard and Jesse, took over the operation of Nichols Construction Company.
Robert served as president when the company incorporated in 1950 until his retirement in 1972.
In 1966 he was elected President of the Nebraska Chapter of Associated General Contractors of America, after serving several years on the board of directors.
Robert was also associated with Nichols Brother’s Partnership, which was farming and cattle feeding operation.
In 1959 he and several local associates formed the Geneva Grain Company and Robert served as president until he sold his interest in 1978
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and served on the board of trustees for many years and was a member of the building committee during all phases of construction for the present church building.
He was a charter member of the Geneva Rotary Club and served as its second president.
He was a member of the Geneva Masonic Lodge 79 AF & AM, the Sesostris Temple Shrine and Elks Lodge 1024.
He served on the Fillmore County Hospital Board from 1952 until 1972 and was involved in the planning and building of the first three phases of the present hospital building.
As a lifelong sports enthusiast, he dearly enjoyed the game of golf.
During the planning and building of the Hidden Hills Country Club, he served as president of the Fillmore County Recreation Association.
Nebraska football was a passion for Bob for over 50 years and while his health allowed, Saturdays found him in Memorial Stadium, cheering for his Cornhuskers.
He also enjoyed attending local school athletic events.
He often looked forward to an evening of playing cards with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and by brothers, Howard, Elvin, and Jesse.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Maxine; daughter, Marilyn Lees and husband, Fred, and grandchildren, Stephanie and Robert; a sister, Helen Hofferber and husband, Kenneth; a brother, Maury and wife, Audrey; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Nichols and Norma Nichols; and many nieces and nephews.
In his quiet and unassuming way, Bob served his church and community well.
Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva on Monday, October 1, with the Rev. Stanley Rider officiating.
Mrs. Judy Ackland accompanied the Ray Nichols family who sang “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and Ray Nichols who sang “The Old Rugged Cross.”
Casket bearers were Richard, Charles and Larry Nichols, Steve Hofferber, Harry Crawford, Linda Paul, Rose Felix, and Dan Nichols.
Honorary bearers were Charles Grothe, John Brooke, Chester Dudley, Paul H. Farmer, Frank Brower, Ben D Fussell, Herman L Larsen and Frank Otte.
Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery with Masonic graveside services.
