Mattie L. Black Stapler was the daughter of Jacob & Mary E. Lewis Black. Though her tombstone lists her birth as having occurred in 1871, census records reveal that Mattie was born in 1879.
She married widower William Silas Stapler on February 23, 1905 (license date), in Madison County, Alabama. Mattie was already the mother of a four year old son, Raymond Hobert, who took the surname Stapler after Mattie's marriage to Silas. Together, Mattie and Silas were the parents of another son, Tommie L. Stapler.
Mattie was a member of the Free Holiness Church, having attended services at both Big Cove and the Bend of Paint Rock. She was badly crippled with arthritis at the time of her death.
