He was a World War II survivor serving in both India and China. He was awarded the Bronze Star. He graduated from Oregon State University. He married Verlie L. Gilmore on Sept. 5, 1958, and worked as the general manager of La Grand Industrial Supply in Portland for many years before retiring in 1983.
Mr. Johnston enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, and his passion for golf, where he was a three time Oregon Senior's champion. He was a very active member of the St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Beaverton, and was a long-time member of the Willamette Valley Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Verlie; son, Jeff of Bend; daughter, Janet Estes of Shelton, Wash.; Verlie's children, Bob and Beth Gilmore of LaGrand; two grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
