"My father [Russell Bookhout] was born in 1898 in Fitchburg, Wisconsin.

He went to the University of Wisconsin with the plan of becoming a journalist. At some point he began going to sea. He did write several articles for the Atlantic Monthly in the late 1930's and early 1940's.
