Anthropologist. Roy A. Rappaport, an anthropology professor at the University of Michigan and Past President of the American Anthropological Association, was thought by many to be one of the most influential thinkers in the field of environmental science. His many publications included Pigs for the Ancestors, often considered the most influential and most cited work in environmental anthropology. It was in that book that he made the distinction between people's cognized environment and their operational environment, concepts that continue to have a huge impact in anthropology and environmental science in general. His impact on anthropology is typically considered foundational.
