High Point - J. Dolen Hedrick, 86, of the Presbyterian Home, Apartment 42, formerly of Ferndale Boulevard, died July 1, 2000.
He was born June 18, 1914, in High Point, a son of Early Roscoe and Nell Sexton Hedrick, He had lived his entire life in High Point and graduated from High Point Central High School. He was a manufacturer's representative and worked for 42 years with U.S. Furniture Industries, selling in South Carolina. He retired in 1989. He was also a former basketball and football official in the North State, Southern and Atlantic Coast Conference. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Physical Training Division. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, trustee and a superintendent of the adult Sunday school departments and served on many church-wide committees. In 1940, he married Nell Holton, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are one daughter, Kay Hedrick Curlee and husband, Jim, of Southern Pines; two sons, John Dolen Hedrick Jr., and wife, Vicki, of Atlanta, and Robert H. Hedrick and wife, Diane, of Greensboro; grandchildren, Bill James of Charlotte, Emily James Patterson and husband, Jay, of Durham, John Dolen Hedrick III, and James M. Hedrick, both of Atlanta, Ga.; step-grandchildren, Keith Curlee and wife, Page, of High Point, Carrie Curlee Johnson and husband, Michael, of Raleigh, Lissa Curlee of Raleigh and Patrick Buchanan of Reston, Va.; great-grandchildren, Hanna and Cooper Patterson; step-great-grandchildren, Milly, Wade and Hunter Curlee, Sam and Ben Johnson; sisters, Bessie H. Simeon and husband, A.J. (Tony), Betty H. Knox and husband, Eddie; brothers, Charles Hedrick and wife, Nancy, and Clyde Hedrick and wife, Lena; sister-in-law, Juanita Hedrick of Wilmington.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church by Dr. William Slater. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will remain at Sechrest Funeral Home until placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral. The family will receive friends at Sechrest tonight from 7-8:30 and other times at the residence. Pallbearers will be grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be trustees of the church.
