Alfred A. “Dutch” Benker of Deshler, NE was born July 24, 1920 in Rosemont, NE to John and Carolina(Nass)Benker. He departed this life Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Beloit Special Care Unit in Beloit, KS at the age of 88 years.

Dutch was baptized in Rosemont, NE on August 15, 1920 by Rev. Ernst and confirmed at St. Peter Church on May 24, 1936 by Rev. Cholcher. Dutch attended school through the 8th grade. Dutche's family moved back to Deshler in 1928. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 24, 1943 and served in WWII till January 31, 1946. Dutch married Dorothy Horan August 18, 1948 at Winner, SD. In 1954 Dorothy and Dutch moved to Deshler. He worked at Reinke Mfg. Dutch spent most of his life cutting meat at Zero Pantry in Deshler, NE and Standard Market in Hebron, NE.

Dutch enjoyed playing cards, visiting casinos, driving around in his car, but most of all spending time with his family.

He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler, NE, Deshler American Legion Halfman Post #352, and the VFW.

He is preceded by his parents, his wife Dorothy, his daughter Kathy Wegener, and one grandson Timothy Benker, three brothers: Reinhold, Gus, and Harold Benker, four sisters: Louise Gragert, Chris Hiebert, Leona Secrest, and Liz Taylor.

He is survived by two sons, Douglas and wife Bernice of Chicago, IL, and John and wife Patti of Omaha, NE, one daughter Mary Beth Zeleny and husband Richard of Deshler, NE, 8 grandchildren: Aaron Zeleny of Lincoln, NE, Mike Benker of Tinley Park, IL, Greg Benker and wife Liz of Evanston, IL, Lance Zeleny and wife Rachel of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Nick Wegener and wife Jessica of Omaha, NE, Matt Wegener of Lincoln, NE, Meghan Brozanic of Omaha, NE, Kayla Benker of Omaha, NE, one sister Darlene Miller and husband Frank of Hebron, NE, one great-grandson Jack Zeleny of Sergeant Bluff, IA, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 22, 2009 at 10:30 AM at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler, NE. Officiant is Pastor Brian Francik. Organist Joyce Schmidt, congregational hymns “How Great Thou Art”, “Old Rugged Cross”, and “Amazing Grace”. Visitation will be Sunday, June 21 at Deshler Memorial Funeral Home from noon to 7:00 pm. Burial will be at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery in Deshler, NE with military graveside by Deshler American Legion Halfman Post #352. Memorials in care of the family. Deshler Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
