Dr John P. Handy, 83, Long Prairie dentist and the longest practicing dentist in the state of Minnesota, died Saturday evening from burns received from a fire in his home Friday afternoon. Dr Handy was severely burned about the hands and face in the fire that gutted his home. Mrs Handy escaped with minor burns, but has been hospitalized with an ankle injury and shock.

John Paul Handy was born Feb 18, 1873 at Dundas, Minn., the son of John and Maria Rhines Handy. When he was a boy of 14, the family moved to Long Prairie. After high school he served as an apprentice to his step-brother H.W. Ross of Milbank, S.D., for 14 months and then entered the School of Dentistry, University of Minnesota. On Sept 12, 1899, he married Miss Maude Baer. Four children were born to this union, Robert, Kathryn, Gertrude, and Edith. Mrs Handy died July 18, 1950. On April 3, 1954, Dr Handy, then 81 years old, married Mrs Kathryn Margaret White of Port Angeles, Washington. They were childhood friends in Northfield, Minn.

Dr Handy is survived by one son Robert J. of Seattle, Wash., three daughters, Mrs John (Gertrude) Devries of Highland Park, Illinois, Mrs Hubert V. (Kathryn) Fuller of LaCrosse, Wisc., and Mrs O. Gordon (Edith) Fredine of Bethesda, Md., and seven grandchildren. In 1949 he and the first Mrs Handy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. It was about that time that Mrs Handy became ill with cancer of the spine of which she died in 1950.
