Census records show that Samuel Elder came to America in 1848, and that he and his wife Margaret came to Kansas from Illinois. He was a farmer in the Elk Creek area of Republic County. Margaret, who appears with Samuel in the 1880 and 1885 census in Republic County, was also born in Ireland. She may have died between 1885 and 1895.
