Alonza grew up in NY and arrived in MN in 1857 but left in 1861. He enlisted in the Union army in St Lawrence county, NY in 1861 but became ill in Cole county, IL and returned to NY and married Phoebe Thurston. The couple returned to MN and Alonza's Dakota county home.

In 1871, the couple moved to Renville county, MN and settled in Boon Lake township. Phoebe died in 1876.

Alonza purchased an additional 40 acres.

Alonza married Albertina Butzer in 1881. The couple had five children
