William was born to William T and Catherine E (Whitehead) and at age 3 moved to Milkwaukee, WI. At 14, he went cross country to Sacramento, CA and stayed over a year and even worked the gold fields during this trip with his father. After his return to WI, he entered the real estate business and served in the WI legislature in for two years in 1864 and 1865.

On November 10, 1858, Mr Bonniwell married Miss Martha Pendergast. The couple added two children:
Harlow H an attorney in Hutchinson
Agnes V

In 1866, he moved to Hutchinson, MN and opened shop in the real estate business and purchased 1,300 acres in his first 2 weeks in addition to property in the growing village. He also purchased interests in the flouring mill

As in WI, Mr Bonniwell served in the MN Legislature under the Democratic party in 1870, 1877, 1878, 1880.
