Samuel G Anderson was born to Ezra S, a Baptist minister, and Sarah and graduated from bowdoin College in Hanover NH. He traveled through IN and enlisted in the Army during the Civil War in OH in 1864 in CO A, 188th INF OH Volunteers at Ironton, OH being the youngest in his company. After the war, his travels brought him to Minnesota where he learned the trade of milling. In 1867 he started a mill in Hutchinson, MN. By 1870, he founded the village of Granite Falls, west of Hutchinson, later returning to Hutchinson.

In 1873, he married the Abby Hutchinson, daughter of Asa Hutchinson, a founder of Hutchinson, MN, on April 9, 1873. Five children were born to the couple; Elizabeth (later Mrs. Lyman Wakefield), Asa (dying in 1893), Chace, Frederika (dying in 1875), Sam Jr. His wife Abby died in 1884 and Sam Sr married a second time, E.W. Erway of Beaver Dam, WI in 1905.

Sam had an interest in public life and held several positions: candidate in 1874 for MN Legislature, MN Congressman 1877, delegate to numerous State Republican conventions,
