His parents were James and Salome (Carver) Allen who were of English descent and came to New England in the 1600s. He completed school in Maine.

He was a Private with Co I of the 16th Maine Inf. during the Civil War.

Later, he moved to MN and assisted in the construction of the James Hill mansion in St Paul as a cabinet maker as well as homes in Hutchinson and Glencoe.

He married Ellen (Houck) on April 26, 1857 in Millersburg, Rice county, MN. Ellen was the daughter of Allison and Charlotte (Christ).

The couple operated a resort on Preston Lake in Renville county. Their children were

Additional children noted in History of the MN River Valley. 1882. page 819 were James, William, Selden, Cora; and, first and second wives died in Maine.

The 1883 Pensioners List shows Mr. Allen on the list in McLeod county and the reason for his $6.00 monthly pension is listed as "Lung dis & rheumatism" and the payments began in March 1881.
