Mayme Ruth (Smith) Bentley, 82, of Tecumseh passed away, Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at her home in Tecumseh.

Mayme was born January 23, 1930 to Elliott J. and Josie Faye (Fogle) Smith in Wanette, Oklahoma.

She was raised and grew up on the family farm northeast of Wanette, Oklahoma. She attended various elementary schools and graduated from Trousdale High in 1950 and was the class Valedictorian.

Mayme married James H. Bentley on May 3, 1951 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. They were married for 61 years. James was in the Air Force for 23 years, retiring as a Major in the USAF.

During her husband's career in the Air Force they traveled extensively living in Germany for three years as well as many stateside assignments. She was a homemaker and mother of four children, two girls and two boys, having one daughter who served a tour in the U.S. Air Force and her youngest son, Daniel, who served in the U.S. Navy and was killed in a motorcycle accident.

She served as the President of the Officers Wives' Club at Calumet Air Force Base in Calumet, Michigan. Mayme enjoyed entertaining, traveling, listening to music, flower gardening and the outdoors; she also had a great sense of humor. She was someone that everyone would want as a best friend. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, BM3 Daniel Bentley; two sisters, Effie Rhodes and Mary Smith; and brother, W.A. Smith.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Retired USAF Major James H. Bentley, of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Vickie and Eric Ehst, of Phoenix, AZ and Debbie Carter, of Phoenix, AZ; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Kathryn Bentley, of Tecumseh; four grandchildren, Nick Ehst, of Phoenix, AZ, Spencer Ehst, of Phoenix, AZ, Sean Bentley, of Tecumseh and Laura Bentley, of Tecumseh; and numerous extended family and friends.
