Opal was born in Great Falls to Edward and Ethel Thorson on Oct. 13, 1925. Raised in the Monarch/Hughsville area, she married Harold K. Matye of Sand Coulee on Nov. 30, 1946.
Opal worked as a clerk at the Monarch post office and, in 1963, was appointed postmaster, serving in that position until she retired in 1992.
Survivors include a son, 2 daughters-in-law, 2 grandsons, a granddaughter, 4 great-grandsons, a sister, and a brother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold "Kelly" Matye in 1986; son Harold "Ed" Matye in 2004; parents Edward in 1958, and Ethel in 1993; and sisters Charlotte Bowman in 1990 and Dorathea Kimbrel in 2000.
