2nd Company "MacGregor's Battery", Stuart Horse Artillery, Horse Artillery Battalion, Cavalry Division, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.


Residence: Clarke County, VA; 17 years old.

Enlisted for 12 months' service on 4/18/1861 at Millwood, VA, he traveled 27 miles to Harper's Ferry, WV, where on 5/12/1861 he was mustered into Captain William N. Nelson's Company "Nelson Guards", as a Private. (This company subsequently became Company C, 2nd Virginia Infantry.)

Present on all Rolls from enlistment through end of commitment.


Enlisted 3/1862, he was mustered into "2nd" Company, 2nd Stuart Horse Light Artillery, as Sergeant.

Appointed 9/17/1862 as 2nd Lieutenant; Commissioned 1/9/1863.

Commended by Major Pelham for his actions 8/28/1862 in 2nd Battle of Manassas, VA.

Wounded in Action 5/1/1863 in Battle of Chancellorsville, VA, where virtually all of his men were Killed In Action if not wounded; commended by General J.E.B. Stuart.

Promoted to 1st Lieutenant.

Assigned as Commandant of Battalion Guard.

Mortally Wounded In Action 8/1/1863 in 2nd Battle of Brandy Station, VA; admitted into C.S.A. General Hospital, Staunton, VA.; died there.


McGregor's Battery [also known as the Stuart Horse Artillery-2nd Artillery] was organized in August, 1862, by dividing Pelham's original company. This unit was assigned to J. Pelham's, R.F. Beckham's, J. Beathed's and R.P. Chew's Battalion of Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia.
