Jupiter Courier (FL) - Wednesday, October 12, 2005
Markham S. Cheever, 87, of Tequesta died Saturday, Oct. 8 at his home.
He grew up in Detroit.
He was a registered professional engineer who managed the design and construction of major building and facility projects for the AT&T Bell System, Eastern Airlines and Georgia Pacific. In the 1950s, he supervised the construction of 47 Distant Early Warning Radar Stations in arctic Alaska and Canada.
He was an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers and was on duty at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii when World War II began with the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was in Okinawa at the end of the war and served in Korea until the end of 1945.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Tequesta.
He earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Michigan in 1941.
He was a member of the Turtle Creek Country Club.
He was previously active in community service on behalf of hospitals, golf clubs and churches in Summit, N.J., and Cashiers, N.C.
He enjoyed gardening, golf, music, history, travel and photography.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Marjorie McCollough; two sons, Paul Markham of Sydney, Australia, and William Byron of Purcellville, Va.; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12 at First Presbyterian Church, Tequesta.
Burial will be in the family cemetery in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Tequesta Memorial Fund.
