Leone was born the seventh of eight children of George (Juergen Gardels) and Dena Cassie (Gesine Gedina) Reiken Johnson.

She married Harold John Gustaf Franks on June 16, 1940 in Jackson. They had three children.

The first, James, died at birth in 1945.
