Mrs. Margaret Yates Durrett, 103, of Carrollton, formerly of Douglasville, died November 30, 2008. She was born in Carroll County on May 12, 1905, the daughter of Robert Atticus Yates and Ada Hixon Yates. She graduated from Villa Rica High School and then received a Business Degree from Southern Business College in Atlanta. In 1924 she began her career with the CPA firm of Ernst & Ernst, and progressed from Secretary to the Tax Manager, to Secretary to the Resident Partner. In 1944, she took a job with Courts & Company Stock Brokers as Secretary to the Managing Partner. During her twenty-one years of employment with Courts & Company, she worked her way up to Administrative Assistant and became a registered representative on the New York Stock Exchange. Mrs. Durrett was married to Olin Herschel Garner from 1934 until his death in 1955. In 1956 she married George Milton Durrett, who died in 1982. She lived in Douglasville from 1965 until 2002, when she moved to Oak Mountain Assisted Living in Carrollton. She was one of the first members of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Villa Rica where she was very active and served as church pianist until she was ninety-seven years old. She was a member of the Douglasville Garden Club and The Hunter Park Senior Citizens. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by sisters, Myrtie Mae Yates Davis and Minnie Kate Yates James, and a brother, William Raymond Yates. Survivors include nieces, Emily (Charlie) Goodwyn of Sunnyvale, CA, Malline Y. Austin of Fayetteville, Frances Y. (Jerome) Skinner of Orlando, FL, Catherine Y. West of Bremen, and Annette Yates of Villa Rica; nephew, Wilson (Tommie) Yates of Villa Rica; 25 great nieces and nephews; and a number of great-great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 5, 2008, at 11:00 A.M. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. John Meadows Officiating. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.
