In June 1880 James was residing as a 4-year old child in the household of his maternal grandmother at Galena, KS, his surname incorrectly written by the enumerator as "Batts." Where his parents were at that date cannot be found.
James had a son named Roy, b. Aug. 3, 1899 at Galena, KS, but neither he nor son Roy can be found in the June 1900 census. James m. Oct. 28, 1902 of record at Joplin, MO, Viola Fester, the apparent mother of his son Roy, the dau. of Adam B. Fesler and his wife Nancy Ann Bosworth of Galena, KS. In the 1910 census of Galena, James Thomas Botts, Jr. and wife Viola, along with their now 12-year old son Roy, were residing in the household of Viola's widowed mother at Galena, they stated as having been married only seven years. Otherwise, Viola appears as an 18-year old unmarried dau. in the household of her parents at Galena in the June 1900 census (in June 1900 the youngest child in that household was Viola's 7-year old sister Goldie). In April 1910 James was employed as a zinc miner.
In his Sept. 12, 1918 WWI draft registration, James Thomas Botts, Jr. was residing at Pocatello, Idaho employed as an oil company truck driver. He was then 42 years old, and despite being married with a child he named his father, J.T. Botts, Sr. of St. Anthony, Idaho as his nearest relative.
In the January 1920 census of Pocatello, Idaho the household of James Botts, Jr. included wife Viola, 22-year old son Roy, and his 74-year old widowed father, James Thomas Botts, Sr. Soon after this census, the Botts family relocated to Brigham City, Utah and later to Los Angeles County, CA.
