Daughter of Paul Abney (1755 – 1820) and the former Eleanor Hamilton (1749 – 1819) from Edgefield, South Carolina. Her father was a veteran of the Revolutionary War; serving under Gen. Andrew Pickens throughout the southern campaign.

Mary Elizabeth married Peter Black in 1812; with whom she had ten children:
