Martin V. Smith was the son of Joseph and Matilda (Durrance) Smith. I think his middle name is probably "Van Buren" since he had a son named Martin Van Buren Smith. He married Mary Ann Elizabeth Sands on 24 Oct 1866 in Tattnall County, Georgia. They had children named: James F., Florena, Agnes Elizabeth, Mary E., Valeria, Melissa, Martin Van Buren, Joseph S. and Herschel Curtis Smith. His obituary in the Jacksonville Journal lists him as a Confederate Civil War Veteran and lists survivors as two daughters: Mrs. J. E. Turner of Gainesville, Florida and Mrs. R. H. Coxe of Jacksonville, FL and four sons; J.F. Smith of Eden, M.V. Smith Jr of Savannah, GA, J.S. Smith of Lake City, FL and H.C. Smith of Jacksonville, FL.
