At the close of the war he resided in Rome, GA and then returned to Stone Mountain. He served in the state legislature for several terms between 1879 and 1888.
He donated a good portion of the land that comprises the Stone Mountain Cemetery.

Death Of Dr. Hamilton
The Oldest Practicing Physician of DeKalb County Dead
Stone Mountain, Ga., October 1. – (Special) – Dr. J.L. Hamilton, of this place, died at his home here this morning after an illness of four weeks. He was the oldest practicing physician and one of the most prominent men in the county, having spent his life of sixty-three years in the county. He was in every sense a Christian and a gentlemen. Few men had more friends. He was loved by every one. He devoted his life to the cause of suffering humanity. His remains will be interred here tomorrow evening at 3 o'clock. The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. V.C. Norcross, of Atlanta. Out of respect for the deceased all business will be suspended during the funeral services.

Dr. J.L. Hamilton died at his home in Stone Mountain yesterday.
He had been ill but a short time, although in poor health for some time.
He was one of the most prominent physicians in DeKalb county, and stood very high as a Mason.
In 1882 he was elected to the general assembly, and last fall was elected senator to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Word.
The Funeral will occur from his late residence today.
