Anne was born May 9, 1899, in Silvesta Township, North Dakota, to Salve O. and Andrine (Hogfoss) Sunderland. She grew up and received her elementary and high school education in Adams, ND, and then attended Mayville Teachers College where she graduated with honors.
She taught all eight grades in the one-room school house. In 1925, she married Andy Johnson and they had a daughter, Arlette Anne, in 1927 at the family home. They were divorced in 1940 and she returned to teaching.

She enjoyed singing hymns, crocheting, knitting, gardening, her flowers, cooking, baking, and serving her family and friends.
She was an active member of the Hingham Lutheran Church, and the honor of a Golden Butterfly was bestowed on her by the Lutheran Women's organization. She sang in the choir, taught Sunday School for approximately 70 years, was president, vice president, and treasurer of Hingham's Lutheran Women's group, was leader of her prayer circle, and quilted more than fifty quilts for missions overseas.
She continued managing the family farm after the death of her beloved husband Norb in 1984. In 1991 Ann came to live with a granddaughter in Amsterdam, because of ill health.
She is survived by a daughter, Arlette Welch of Murray, Utah; granddaughter Vicki Danhof of Amsterdam, six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Besides her husband Norb, she was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
