The death of the Chief of the Fire Department, Mr. James H. Hunt, which occurred last night at the Queen's Hospital, was the cause of sorrow to his numerous friends, who had hoped that he would recover from the serious complications of diseases from which he suffered.
He was a kamaaina in Honolulu, where he arrived about twenty years ago. He was born in Waltham, Mass., about fifty years ago, and there a mother and sister survive him.
After being in the employ of James Dodd and Macfarlane & Co., and an active member of the volunteer fire department, he became chief of the fire department in 1894, and held his position with honor until the day of his death.
He had his faults as all men have, but he was always a true and generous friend to those to whom he took a liking.
He leaves no family here and the remains will be buried from the Masonic Temple at 2:30 and interred in the Masonic plot at the Nuuanu cemetery.
The fire brigade will follow the cortege until the entrance of the Pauoa Valley.
The assistant chief, C.H. Thurston, has been appointed acting chief of the fire department.
