Son of George McGrew and Elizabeth Cravenson. He married Elizabeth Ann Conn on August 3, 1825 in Spencer County, KY. They had 14 children, Henry, Maldonia Ann, Sarah, Jesse C., Henry Clinton, George Thomas, James Culbertson, Francis Marcellus, Sanford Trammell, Louisa "Sis" Perkins, William Matson, Jeremiah Vardeman, Caroline Vardeman "Duck," and Susan Martha "Puss." Joseph was a stone mason. In 1832 the Salem Baptist Church was organized by the Rev. Jeremiah Vardeman. Joseph put a large double chimney of stone between the two cabin rooms of the church and a huge fireplace in each room. Joseph died of pneumonia.
