Jean Sorensen passed away at age 93 on September 10, 2012, in Bellevue, Washington following a brief illness. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and mother-in-law, who will be greatly missed by her family and so many others.

Jean was born March 13, 1919, in Superior, Wisconsin to Henry N. Nelson and Rose J. Leraan Nelson. She always spoke fondly of her childhood, surrounded by a large extended family and summer memories of Lake Amnicon, Wis. She graduated early from high school and earned her B.A. degree at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where she sang in the choir. After graduation Jean taught high school English and Latin in Wisconsin, and during that time she met her future husband, Robert Kenneth Sorensen of Menominee, Mich. Jean and Bob were married in Superior, Wis. in 1941 and shared 58 years together until his death in December 1999. They had three children and lived in Iowa City, Iowa for 17 years, and later another 17 years in Kalamazoo, Mich. They relocated to Bellevue in 1985, and for the past two and a half years Jean was a resident of Emeritus at Bellevue.

Jean was a member of P.E.O. for more than 50 years. She enjoyed playing bridge her entire adult life, which led to many friendships wherever she lived. She was a gifted pianist who appreciated all types of music. Through the years Jean participated in book clubs, church and civic groups, and maintained a keen interest in politics and current events. She was also quite a sports fan.

In addition to her husband, Jean was predeceased by her daughter, Linda, in 1972, her brother, Glenn Nelson, and her sister, Joyce Hendrickson.

Jean is survived by her daughter Judy Schultz (Stephen) of Denver, IA; son Robert Sorensen (Linda) of Bellevue, WA; grandchildren Kristin Schultz (Joe Markley) of Overland Park, KS., Andrea Schultz Birt (Derek) of Iowa City, IA, David Sorensen (Jennifer) of Seattle, WA and Andrea Sorensen of Lebanon, NH.; great-grandchildren Phoebe and Oliver Markley, and Henry and Walker Birt; sister-in-law Betty Nelson of Duluth, MN.; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jean will be interred next to her husband at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, WA. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
