LONACONING'S MAYOR DIES IN CHURCH ANNEX
End Came Suddenly While Partaking of Refreshments
After Firemen's Drill.

Lonaconing, Md,, Aug. 19 David Clarkson Laird, 66, Mayor
of Lonaconing died suddenly last night at 8 o'clock of a heart attack, in the annex of the Presbyterian church.
Mayor Laird who was a member of Goodwill Fire Company, was
seated at a table with fellow members in uniform where refreshments where being served in connection with a fete, sponsored by the Ladies Bible Class, when he collapsed. He, with the other firemen had just finished drilling In front of the Soldier's Monument, as part of the festivities.

Serving his fifth term as the town's chief executive he was always keenly interested in civic affairs. His terms as mayor were marked by diligent effort to erase unsightly sections around the town. He was instrumental in having a number of flood walls erected, streets cobbled and hard surfaced and new bridges built His efforts were largely
responsible in serving the National Youth Administration machine shop for Lonaconing. This year, in company with several local business men,he appearcd before Governor Herbert O'Conor at Annapolis with a request for a new high school, which plea was successful.

A son of the late Joseph and Anne Laird, natives of Scotland, he lived all his life here. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Knights of Pythias and was employed as an engineer at the Coney mine of the George's Creek Coal Company.

Surviving are his widow Mrs. Mary Mason Laird and a son Galen, at home. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Mary Love, Lonaconing; Mrs. William Dash, Charleron Pa., and Mrs. James Torbet, Cumberland.
