William Benton Shields was born Aug. 21 1840 in Wright county, Missouri. His father was James Shields. Mother was Ruth Ann Edington. His grandfather was Benjamin Franklin Shields, grandmother was Mary Shanan.
The Shields family came west on a wagon train crossing in 1849 ending at arelative's ranch in Napa, California. the four children of James Shields on the wagon trip were william Benton (the eldest) Candace, John and Marion.
James Shields died 1864 in Philo (Christine) in the Anderson Valley, Ca. William Benton inherited his father's land. He held the land for manys years but moved on after his marriage to Mary Jane Moore to Oregon. first to Eugene, then Marshfield, finally in Tenmile area. He spent the rest of his life there. The Philo "Shields" orginal land was never sold til after his death in 1888.
