He was the only child of General Pershing to survive the fire in their quarters at the Presidio in San Francisco, California. He graduated from Yale University in 1931. On April 22, 1938 he was married to Muriel Bache Richards at St. Thomas Church in New York City. During World War II he enlisted as a Private in the United States Army. He asked for no special privileges and to be treated like any new recruit. After the death of his wife, Muriel, in 1978 he married Eleanor Grant. He died at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
