Retired Y-12 Supervisor. James Vernon Haggard Sr., 79, of Oak Ridge, TN, died at 1:10 p.m. Friday, April 10, 1992, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge after an extended illness. Mr. Haggard began his employment in Oak Ridge in 1944 with Tennessee Eastman Company at the Y-12 Plant. At the time of his retirement in 1975, he had worked as a chemical operations supervisor at Y-12 for Union Carbide Nuclear Division. Born June 16, 1912, in Unionville, he was the son of the late Dr. Daniel Carr Haggard, of DeKalb County, AL, and the late Frances Johnson Haggard of Chattanooga. A 32nd degree Mason, he was also a York Rite Mason and a former member of the Zamora Shrine Temple in Birmingham, AL. In addition, Mr. Haggard was a member of Central Baptist Church. An avid Tennessee fisherman, he also enjoyed fishing in Alabama. His first wife, Margaret Bates Haggard, died November 26, 1979. He married former Atlanta school teacher, Laura Bridges Haggard, in June of 1981. In addition to his wife, Mr. Haggard is survived by a daughter and her husband, Margaret Yvonne and Joe Larry Allen of Clinton; and two sons and their wives: Daniel Carr III and Leslie McMahone Haggard of Cocoa, FL, and James Vernon Jr. and Janet Allen Haggard of Merritt Island, FL. He is also survived by a brother, John Kenneth Haggard of DeKalb County, AL; six grandchildren: Joe Larry Allen Jr. and his wife, Stacey Ann Mack Allen, Sonja Yvette Allen Cantrell and her husband, Daniel A. Cantrell, Michelle Lynn Allen, Daniel Carr Haggard IV, James Vernon Haggard III, and Trevor Allen Haggard; and by two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 1 today, April 12, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Ron Herrod officiating. Burial will be at Tennessee Valley Memory Gardens in Claxton community.
