Mr. Laufer was the son of Henry and Edith (Leichner) Laufer. He attended Jefferson School and graduated from Walla Walla High School.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater until he was wounded during D-Day in France. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Oak Leaf Cluster.

Laufer was a self-employed excavating contractor. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, BPO Elks Lodge 287, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Disabled Amerian Veterans, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He married Alvera Koob Stone on June 19, 1971, in Walla Walla.

Laufer is survived by his wife, at home; a stepdaugter, Marlene Lindsey of Walla Walla; a son from his first marriage to Betty Jean Hicks, Richard "Dick" R. Laufer Jr., of Portland; a stepson, Marc Stone Jr. of Pasco; his father Frank Sanders of Walla Walla; a sister, Barbara Fanciulla of Yakima, a brother, Robert Laufer of Walla Walla; and seven grandchildren. Two brothers preceded him in death.
