Sharon Yvonne Alston-Pool

Sharon Yvonne Alston was born on February 21, 1964 in San Diego, California to James and Thelma Alston. She received her formal education in the San Diego Unified School District graduating from Mission Bay High School in June 1982.

Sharon, as a young child, was a superior athlete and had a passion for running track; her nickname was "Pinto." She would compete with any and everyone in the neighborhood. Sharon was a member of the San Diego Cougars Track and Field Team, and as a member of the track team, she traveled extensively.

Sharon was raised in the Church, often attending the 31st Street Seventh-day Adventist Church where she was a member of the Pathfinder's Club and Adventist Youth Society. She had a tremendous love for family, she was a natural leader with an outgoing personality, and she was always the life of the party.

Sharon enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. in 1985. She later met and married Jarvis Battle while stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, and to this union they were blessed with a son, Derrick Isaiah Battle.

While serving on active duty, Sharon was stationed in California, Hawaii, Japan, North Carolina, and Virginia. Her military duties also included serving in Kosovo and in Europe for two tours, supporting military operations for the United Nations. She obtained the rank of Master Sergeant and after 23 years and five months retired honorably from the United States Marine Corp. in 2006. Sharon's military honors include:

Sharon was preceded in death by her stepfather, Robert J. Thomas and her mother, Thelma Thomas. She leaves to cherish her memory, one son, Derrick Isaiah Battle of Herndon, Virginia; two brothers, James Linwood Alston, Jr., and Duane Tyrone Thomas of San Diego; her sister-in-law, Collett Thomas of San Diego, CA; her nieces and nephews Shameka Bryant Thomas; Brandon James Alston; Duane Tyrone Tyrone Thomas, Jr.; Kenya Kamarrah Alston Dejah Ionna Thomas; De' Ahani Nyriah Thomas, and her grandmother, Louise Young and a host of friends to mourn her passing.
