Margaret Elsie Swanson, "Peg", as she was known to her family and friends, was born July 2, 1924, in her family home in Columbus, Nebraska, to Otto and Ida (Gehring) Egger. She attended school in Columbus, graduating from Kramer High School. She had a love for music. She was in the school band, played French horn, and enjoyed playing the piano. Her childhood was filled with adventures with her four sisters – Gert, Ann, Marie, and Toni. She worked at Columbus Music, and bought her piano there, which she kept throughout her life.

Peg met her husband, Nels Swanson at a dance, and the two were united in marriage on June 12, 1950, in Grand Island, Nebraska. They farmed in the Genoa, Nebraska, area with Peg taking a job at GTE in Columbus. They eventually discontinued farming and moved to Columbus. Peg and Nels had three children – Jeannie, Kathy, and Tim.

Peg mastered the art of cooking; her family always looking forward to the holidays with the table was set with her amazing array of food and pies. She was an avid collector of porcelain dolls and loved gardening. She was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Columbus.

Peg was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, always putting her family first. She was always there when she was needed; to babysit a sick grandchild, paint a wall, or make brownies for a birthday party.
