BENNINGTON - Horace C. Baker, 89, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center, following a brief illness.

He was born in Shaftsbury, June 14, 1923, the son of Robert and Clara (Bump) Baker, and attended local schools.

For 22 years, he was employed at Vermont Tissue in North Bennington and for several years at Garrison Printing, He later worked as the BCIC building superintendent in North Bennington. He and his wife owned and operated Baker's Community Care Home. He was also a sheriff with the Bennington Sheriff's Department for many years.

Mr. Baker enjoyed going to garage and tag sales and the racetrack, as well as buying, selling, tinkering and fixing things.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Lorraine Baker of Bennington, two grandchildren, a great-grandson, two step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, several step-great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins; and his caregiver, Donna Browe of Shaftsbury.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Buck), in 1986; a son, Frank Baker; a stepdaughter, Mary Dolly Flanders; a step-grandson; and three brothers, Chauncey, Theodore and Charles Baker.

The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, where friends may call from 12:30 p.m. prior to the service officiated by the Rev. Robin Greene.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington.
